Smart Cycling , based on the League of American Bicyclists’ Traffic Skills 101, is the basic bicycling education course in our curriculum. NJBWC offers these courses on its own and in cooperation with other organizations. If your organization would like to hold a class in your area, or would like us to publicize one, please contact us at

The classes are normally limited to 15 students and held only if more than 5 students are registered. Smart Cycling is ideal for new cyclists who want to learn the basics, those returning to cycling from a long hiatus, people who want to be more independent on their bike, and those who feel a little nervous while cycling in traffic. If you do not know how to ride a bike – that is, start, stop, balance and steer without falling down – this is not the right class for you. (For Learn to ride classes, check here.) Participants must know how to balance and control a bicycle. Smart Cycling is taught only by certified League Cycling Instructors and covers the rules of the road, traffic principles, bicycle safety checks, bike-handling skills and crash avoidance techniques. The course includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age fourteen, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.
