Commuters, residents, and visitors now have a safe, secure, and weather protected place to store their bikes while commuting by train or shopping downtown. The Summit Bike Depot, located at the Summit NJ TRANSIT train station, officially opened on Sunday, September 21, 2025. The key-fob controlled facility can store up to 32 bicycles, with e-bike charging stations, and 24- hour video surveillance to ensure bike safety for all.
The Bike Depot program was first launched by New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition (NJBWC) in October 2014 in Montclair and has since expanded to multiple locations across New Jersey, including Bloomfield and now Summit. NJBWC partnered with the City of Summit and NJ TRANSIT to make the dream of providing alternative bike storage in Summit a reality.
As Summit’s Mayor Elizabeth Fagan stated at the depot’s ribbon cutting ceremony, “Cycling to the train station is a convenient, healthy, and cost-effective way to commute. The new Summit Bike Depot makes it easy for residents to avoid the hassle of finding parking or arranging drop-offs, while giving them a safe place to store their bikes before boarding their train.”
Safe bike parking is an important part of NJWBC’s mission to provide safe transportation options for people throughout NJ. “Bike parking is often overlooked in active transportation planning,” says NJBWC Executive Director Debra Kagan. “But by providing this important asset in places like downtown Summit, we are supporting non-motorized commuting options, connecting the first and last mile between home and transit.”
NJBWC hopes to see more bike depots across NJ, in the near future. The town of Summit has become a leader in substantiable active transportation with the opening of their bike depot. Since most local trips are under 3 miles, having infrastructure like bike depots encourages more bike commuting and cycling to business areas for shopping, which will help to reduce traffic, parking issues, and is ultimately better for the environmental and our health.
The Summit Bike Depot would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship of our lead sponsor Summit Conservancy, and our additional sponsors The City of Summit, The Langworthy Family, Summit Foundation, People For Bikes, and Bristol Myers Squibb.
The depot is a memberships-based facility and can be purchased for $30 per month or $300 per year. Upon joining, members will receive an access key fob by mail.
