NJBWC is seeking candidates for a full-time position as Advocacy and Policy Director (A&P Director). This position’s primary responsibilities will be developing a strategy and directing the organization’s advocacy community engagement programs and policy initiatives to further the mission and goals of NJBWC through creating better conditions and access for biking, walking and rolling that make New Jersey a safer, more sustainable and equitable place to live, work, and play. This position reports to the Executive Director and will be expected to work closely with other members of the NJBWC team.

As the A&P Director, you will develop the strategic approach and programs to advance active transportation and safe streets throughout the state of NJ. NJBWC promotes awareness and implementation of the NJ Safe Passing Law, Complete Streets and Vision Zero, and other policies that support safe, active transportation. NJBWC also provides advocacy support, strategic guidance, and education resources to community leaders, agencies and advocacy groups. As the A&P Director you will manage existing programs and partnerships and lead the expansion of NJBWC’s outreach through the further development of the SAFE Network, targeted communications, and the development of resources to empower advocates across the state.

You will work collaboratively with community leaders, elected officials, local and regional organizations, and local advocates. You will help implement the outreach and advocacy goals outlined in NJBWC’s Strategic Plan, including building a statewide advocacy network. You will also play an active role in communicating and implementing these programs to reach advocates and communities throughout the state. This work will be carried out in collaboration with the Executive Director, the Trails and Active Mobility Director, the Program Manager, the Communications Consultant, and other members of the NJBWC team.

NJBWC’s safe-streets advocacy is complemented by its work to expand access to safe, off-street transportation through the promotion and development of trails and greenways. As A&P Director you will collaborate with our Trails and Active Mobility Director to integrate trails and greenways into NJBWC’s safe streets and Complete and Green Streets advocacy.

In collaboration with and under the direction of the Executive Director, the A&P Director will help develop and implement NJBWC’s statewide advocacy and policy strategy. This work will include collaborating with partners to identify and develop legislative priorities, educate decision-makers and the public, and advocate for legislation at the state level. The Director will also promote local and regional policies that advance NJBWC’s strategic goals and position safe active transportation as a critical component of New Jersey’s transportation system. Policy priorities include, but are not limited to, Vision Zero and Target Zero policies at the state, county, and local levels; Complete and Green Streets policies; Safe Passing Law education and implementation; e-micromobility legislation; statewide active transportation planning; and policies and programs that advance safe bicycling.

As A&P Director you will represent NJBWC in partner coalitions, legislative hearings, and other policy-focused meetings and events, as determined in consultation with the Executive Director.

As part of building advocacy awareness and promoting policy throughout the state you will be responsible for creating content including but not limited to: emails, blogs, case studies, tools for advocacy, and press releases, with the support of the staff based on their respective areas of responsibilities.

As A&P Director you will work remotely but must be able to travel within New Jersey for in-field research, meetings, and in-person events as needed and may be required to attend meetings, and events during weekends and evenings.
