New Street Signs to Promote the Safe Passing Law

As part of our network’s collective efforts to promote the New Jersey Safe Passing Law, the New Jersey Department of Transportation has started to install the 4FT. MIN. CLEARANCE TO PASS sign (R4-19) on state roads. There is also the R9-20 sign, BIKES ALLOWED USE OF FULL LANE.

Your local advocacy efforts to ask local/county government to install these signs on county roads in your community is critical. The process may vary slightly in each community.

Please scroll to page 1058 in the MUTCD for the guidelines showing the specific language providing guidance to engineers installing these signs. How this language is interpreted may vary as well.

Both signs are different as are the reactions they may elicit from people driving cars or riding bicycles. Please email Paul Mickiewicz to discuss how you might approach your local municipality or county to request these signs be posted in your town.
